DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING

About the Department

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering was launched in the year 1998 with Under Graduate programme BE in Computer Science and Engineering. The Post Graduate Programme ME – Computer Science and Engineering was started in the year 2007. The current intake students are 120 for UG Programme and 18 for PG Programme. Both UG and PG Programmes are conducted based on the syllabus prescribed by the Anna University, Chennai. Major subjects included in both the programmes are: Data Structures, Database Management Systems, Web Technology, Internet Programming, Artificial Intelligence, Mobile Computing, IoT, Data Science and Cloud Computing.

The strength of the department is largely contributed by a team of dedicated, qualified and experienced faculty members who are specialised in various fields. The quality academic performance of the department was certified and accredited by NATIONAL BOARD OF ACCREDITATION (NBA), NEW DELHI. The research activities of the department are promoted by the faculty members with good number of PhD degree holders and many of them are pursuing their Doctoral Programme. The research promotion of the department is evidenced by number of research papers published in refereed Journals.

Besides the regular classroom lectures the students are given laboratory exercise to acquire practical skill and computing capability. For this the department has 6 well equipped laboratories. They are:

  • Van Rossum Lab for Python & C Programming
  • Ada Lovelace Lab forOperating Systems and DBMS
  • Tim Berners LeeLab forInternet Programming and Security
  • Edsger Dijkstra Lab for Computer Networking
  • Andy Rubin Lab for Cloud Computing
  • Donald KnuthLab for Data Structure &Communication

Apart from the central library, the Department has a separate Library which is the source for instant reference by the students. The students are exposed to several co-curricular activities for enriching their knowledge and skills in Information Technology. The students are motivated to participate in seminars, workshops and conferences organised by the Anna University, IIITs and other technical institutions. They are also encouraged to organise the seminars and workshops on current trends of Computer Science and Engineering, inviting participants from other institutions and experts from Institutions of Excellence such as Anna University, IIITs, NIT-T, BSNL and other IT industry sector. Guest Lectures are arranged for the benefit of the students inviting eminent Professors, Industrial Experts, Scientists, Technocrats in IT fields. Students are encouraged to undertake socially relevant projects and such projects provides an opportunity for the students to serve the society.

The Department has signed MOU with Ozone Cyber Security- Ernakulam, Liveware- Trichy, and i-neuron Technologies-Bangalore facilitating the students to carry out research project, enhancing the placement potential through inplant training and Internships for acquiring experience in industrial environment. The department is a member in the Professional body, Computer Society of India (CSI). The Department’s association with CSI promotes interaction of the students with the professionals and to update their knowledge by attending the seminars and workshops organized under the guidance of CSI.

Continuous efforts and hardwork of the faculty members resulted in placing our students in reputed MNC companies like TCS, WIPRO, INFOSYS, CTS, HCL,VDART, IDBI etc.,

Ethical hacking is an emerging tool used for testing the network security. The security risks and vulnerabilities in a network can be recognized with the help of ethical hacking. The job of an ethical hacker is to purposefully penetrate security systems to fix the weak points. The professionals employ methods similar to that used by malicious hackers, but they are required to be a step or two ahead of their vicious counterparts. Ethical or white hat hackers hack the system with the permission from the client and present a maturity scorecard for the network that highlights their overall risk. Penetration testing or pen testing is a way of evaluating Internet applications, networks and computer systems for the level of  vulnerability. This test helps in gauging the network and giving it a real-world assessment.

A live demonstration about hacking was done and he specified that hacking may not be always successful. In the demonstration  an  URL “ozoneteam.ddns.net” was given to the students, using the URL  android apk file was downloaded in the  mobile phone, with the help of the file he hacked the gallery, camera, call log of the mobile phone etc., He also demonstrated  that how the face book and gmail account can be hacked using phishing technology.

He also explained about the difference between logging out and history deletion. He  also specified the WannaCry ransomware attack which was happened on May 2017  the worldwide cyberattack by the WannaCry ransomware cryptoworm, which targeted computers running the Microsoft Windows operating system by encrypting data and demanding ransom payments in the Bitcoin cryptocurrency. He described about the Wi-Fi hacking and hacked the other country website. He also specified the techniques to be followed to keep our mobile and laptop data to be secured.

Students benefitted by understanding how ethical hacking benefits many organizations computer and individual system by providing security with effective manner before the attack takes place. Students gave the feedback about the session and Selvi. G.Durkadevi of final year CSE proposed the vote of thanks. Dr.K.Geetha Asso.prof/CSE organized the function in an ostentatious manner.

Research & Development

OBJECTIVE:

The objective of the Research and Development is to make the students bring out their innovative skills and make them into real life projects by

  • Understanding the complexity and ambiguity of empirical work
  • Developing practical skills
  • Understanding of the nature of science
  • Cultivating interest in learning science
  • Developing teamwork abilities

The students choose their desired domain and create projects of their own based on their innovative ideas and execute them successfully with support from the faculty.

Automated Water Level Monitoring System to deploy in the Water supply tank so that whenever the water level in the tank reaches a certain lower level, the motor automatically turns on and fills the tank with water, and when the water in the tank reaches a set higher level the motor automatically turns off. This project helps the user save and conserve water. The above mentioned projects are done using Raspberry Pi kit and respective sensors.

Rumana Fervin/ Third Year

Ummal Bajria/ Third Year

Automated Light Controlling system – which monitors the light intensity of the room and automatically turn the lights on in the room when the light intensity is at a low level which indicates that the room is slightly dark and needs light. This project helps us save electricity by turning the lights ON when only and absolutely necessary.
