DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

About the Department

The Department of Civil Engineering was launched in the academic year 2006-2007. In the year 2010 the Department was upgraded as a Post Graduate Department with the commencement of M.E. Structural Engineering. The Department maintains a constant focus on high quality of Teaching and Learning processes in Civil Engineering that makes the outgoing students confident in meeting the challenges arising out of technological advancement in the field.

The Department offers B.E. Civil Engineering programme with the total annual sanctioned intake of 60, following the curriculum prescribed by Anna University, Chennai. The major subjects included are: Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Water Resource Engineering, Geo technical Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Construction Management.

The Department is under the constant care of a team of committed, qualified and student centric Teachers. Further, the learning activities are supported by several laboratories endowed with advanced instruments and equipments. The major laboratories are: Advanced Structural Engineering Lab, Computer Aided Design and Drafting Lab, Strength of Materials Lab, Applied Hydraulics Engineering Lab, Soil Mechanics Lab and Water and Wastewater Analysis Lab. These laboratories play a crucial role in imparting hands on experience and practical skills to the students.

The students are encouraged to participate National and Regional Level Seminars, Workshops and Conferences organized by Research organizations such as CECRI, SERC, BHEL and Institutes of Excellence like NITs and IITs. The department also encourages the students in organizing and conducting Seminars and Workshops on chosen field inviting participants from the other Institutions. In order to expose the students to recent technological advances, Guest Lectures are arranged inviting eminent Scientists, Technocrats, Industrialist and Professors from NIT-T and IIT-M.

Industrial and Field visits are regularly arranged and the students are taken to Cement Factories, Brick making units, Railway Workshops, Tanning Industries, Dams and Reservoirs. These activities give the students an exposure to real work-space Environment.

As of now (2021) 12 Batches of Civil Engineering Graduates have passed out of the Institution. The Department Alumni are occupying high position in overseas construction industries, Government Departments and many of them have established their own construction Industries.

In view of changing environment leading to climate change and consequent adverse effects such as high temperature, cyclone, and heavy rainfall, the safety of dwellers in the buildings need to be protected. The Department is very much conscious of adverse changes in the environment and making efforts to modify and redesign in Civil Engineering education and training.

Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS)

Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS) was established in 1948 with its headquarters at Delhi. It is affiliated to the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE).It has more than 40 chapters in various parts of the country. IGS – Trichy Chapter is one of such chapters working under IGS National Body, New Delhi. IGS Trichy Chapter was started in the year 2014and is dedicated to advancing knowledge and creating opportunities for the sharing of information by academicians and practitioners in a broad range of geotechnical disciplines with the view of contributing to the achievement of excellence in geotechnical engineering for the benefit of society.

The Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS) aims at promoting co-operation amongst engineers and scientists for the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in the fields of Soil Mechanics, Foundation Engineering, Soil Dynamics, Engineering Geology, Rock Mechanics, Snow and Ice Mechanics and allied fields and their practical applications. It provides a common forum for academicians, research workers, designers, construction engineers, equipment manufacturers and others interested in geotechnical activity.

M.I.E.T. Engineering College has established its connection with Indian Geotechnical Society, Trichy Chapter with an aim to be a part of its integral system. All the faculty members of Civil Engineering Department along with the interested UG and PG students are members of IGS Trichy Chapter. Also, Department of Civil Engineering has launched its student’s chapter for the long-term benefits of the students. M.I.E.T.
